Automatic bench top digital refractometer for testing beverages

The soft drink industry produces beverages such as fruit juice, energy drinks and carbonated drinks. One of the key factors in producing these beverages is maintaining consistency between batches of their product for quality control and process control. In order to keep this consistency the manufacture needs to test the product to determine the total concentration of water-soluble solids (Brix value). For practical purposes the Brix value is generally interpreted as sugar content because soft drinks contain only very small amounts of other ingredients, with the majority being sugar.

Testing of the Brix value is usually performed using a refractometer, preferably a digital refractometer. Digital refractometers provide a higher degree of accuracy and precision as compared to hand held analogue refractometers. Some digital refractometers can also be connected to a computer and/or printer via an RS232 serial port for documentation of test results as performed at processing sites, quality control rooms or research and development labs.

Automatic bench top digital refractometers have extra added features which include a thermo-module to control the temperature of the product, thus eliminating the need for a constant temperature water bath. The measurement starts automatically after the sample reaches your targeted temperature. Digital refractometers that are designed specifically for beverage testing have the added feature of a flat sample stage designed for easy clean up.

Basic Woodworking Joints - Rebate and Housing Joints

A rebate joint, at its simplest, is a slightly stronger version of a butt joint it provides contact between the mating components in two planes instead of one. A rebate is formed by removing a square or rectangular section across the end or along the edge of a piece of wood using hand or power tools.

Rebate joint
In the simplest type of rebate joint, the rebate is normally cut to half the wood thickness, leaving a projecting tongue equal to the thickness of the other, square-cut component. This type of rebate is often used on the lops of bookcases and shelf unils where the top rests on and between the top ends of the sides. It may also be used for joining drawer fronts to and between the sides. At least half the end grain is hidden.

The joints are usually reinforced with pins, driven through the overlap in pairs at opposing angles - this is called dovetail nailing.

The rebate is usually cut with a rebate plane. This has a width guide and a depth stop and cleans the vertical edge of the cut as it is used. Short rebates in a board end, for example can be cut with a saw but care is needed.

About the author: Now you have known about rebate and Hosing joints. Working with wood requires a lot of expertise. You should know how to control wood pests and how to work with Plywood .

Kreg Joint

Kreg K2000 Pocket Hole Jig Review

A Diy Guide On Woodworking Jigs

Woodworking jigs are a necessary part of any woodworking shop. They are great for repetitive tasks in many wood working projects. They make complex projects easier to manage and faster. You can purchase pre made jigs or make your own. Although they are inexpensive, making your own from scrap wood is even cheaper. Depending on the type of projects you like to do, you will need a variety of different jigs.

Types of Woodworking Jigs

Dovetail jigs are great for making dovetail joints accurately. These can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Another option is to make your own dovetail jig. You can find templates for making your own jigs on the internet or in most stores that sell wood working supplies. Many of these templates allow you to make up to twelve different size jigs.

You may want to puck up a dovetail bit for your router and a dovetail saw. These are great tools if you intend to make your own jigs. Templates allow you to make variable spaced or fixed dovetails for a variety of projects, including cabinets, drawers and small boxes. Some systems come with bits and templates together in one kit. These save money compared to purchasing the components separately.

Dovetail saws are used to cut not only dovetails, but other fine joints for projects. The blades on these saws are thinker than other saws. This allows for greater accuracy. It's important to purchase a good quality tool for making tight joints and professional looking projects. Look for about fourteen to seventeen points per inch in a good quality saw.

A dowel jig is used for making quality, consistent dowels. If you are using a thick timber, get a self centering jig for better accuracy. There are a variety of sizes from a quarter to one half inch. Complete kits are available that include the dowel jig with several hundred dowels in a variety of sizes. Glue is sometimes included in these kits.

A kreg jig is great for cabinet making. Perfectly positioned slides are necessary if the movement in the drawer is to be smooth. Using kreg jigs save time because you won't need to measure and mark the spaces for drawer slides. These make it easier to mount metal drawer slides. They can be used for center, bottom or extension mounted drawers. This is an inexpensive, yet versatile piece of equipment.

Making Woodworking Jigs Yourself

Making your own woodworking jigs saves money in supplies. Use inexpensive materials and scrap pieces of plywood for making your own jig. Since you use the jigs for one project only, you don't want to spend much on materials. If you plan to re use your jigs, use a stronger hardwood to make them.

You can find instructions for making your own jigs in woodworking books or magazines. Instructions are also available on the internet. You can print these out for future reference. Consider getting a good binder to keep your jig making instructions organized in your workshop. Using plastic page covers will protect the instructions from getting dirty, ripped or damaged.

Diy Wood Furniture Patterns Pro Used Restoration Hardware as Inspiration For Carpentry Projects

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Ana White is at the helm of the DIY industry's newest and fastest-growing population in carpentry, posting DIY wood furniture patterns in a peer-to-peer carpentry community.

White graduated from refurbished and painted furniture to building her own furniture from scratch and using power tools. Wanting to share her latest hobby, she began her blog in the fall of 2009. Within 12 months, her readership exploded to 500,000 monthly visitors and two million monthly impressions, surpassing ten million pageviews in the first year alone.

The vast majority of her readers are female. She estimates that the site's Facebook page gains 500 to 1,000 followers weekly. "Saving money building furniture instead of buying it is usually what draws people to the site," says White. "But they soon discover that with a little work, they can save thousands off retail prices, even used Restoration Hardware pieces cost more than building a similar one."

She continues featuring the free plans and is fiercely competing with established woodworking websites like Lumberjocks. Her blog snagged the attention of national media, and White has been featured in Woman's Day, Fresh Home, Popular Woodworking and Home Design, as well as newspapers around the U.S. and many prominent websites, such as HGTV and Apartment Therapy.

"This site is unique because the furniture built is done by a woman for women," says White, who has used Pottery Barn furniture as inspiration for many of her project plans.

The majority of White's projects only need a few basic tools like a circular saw, drill, counter sink drill bit and the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig. Plans specify the skill level, from beginner to advanced, materials needed, a cut list and provide illustrated step-by-step instructions. "You can scour the area for a discount West Elm headboard and bed frame, or you can make your own for much, much less," she says.

Jet Table Saw Review

Rousseau 2700XL Saw Stand For Makita 2703, Hitachi C10RA, DeWalt DW744 ...

Saw 7

Well, it's official, even before the new Saw movie comes out, Variety has told the world that Saw 7 has been given the green light. According to reports, the new movie is to begin production in January of 2010 and they are going to be filming the new project in 3-D. Yes, the Saw series is going to the next level of kitsch; they are showing you a 3-D horror film.

For those not in the know, 3-D films actually have a long and storied past, though they have always been in the realm of kitsch. As early as the 1950s, several movies were made in the 3-D style and they were intended to make it look as if the action was jumping out at you. They used specially colored glasses which would help your eyes see the pictures as 3-D instead of being the blurry mishmash you'd see without them.

The trouble was, the experience was never as exciting as it seemed it should be and 3-D movies have been out of style for a while. Saw 7 however is part of a new breed of 3-D movies that is filmed using HD video cameras instead of the more traditional film cameras (for the first time in history, digital film is good enough to make it happen).

Not much is known about this latest installment of the Saw series other than that David Hackl (who was involved in the production of the second, third and fourth films before taking the reigns to direct the fifth movie) is back to direct this newest film. This is likely because of the extra time demands that are involved in making a 3-D film and the director of Saw 6, Kevin Greutert is still involved with the final details of that film. Having been dropped from the series after the 5th installment though, it will be interesting to see how David Hackl will adapt and bring his style back in while still providing some kind of contiguity to the previous movie.

In addition, we know that veteran script writers Marcus Dunston and Patrick Bell are coming back as well. And Jigsaw himself, Tobin Bell, has promised he's going to back at least through Saw 8. Dunston and Bell have promised to make copious use of the 3-D technology to make some truly amazing traps for the latest contestants in Jigsaw's puzzle of life. Saw 7 should be out in time for Halloween 2010.
